Description Digital room correction for DAC-based systems The miniDSP SHD Studio provides the same powerful DSP platform and Dirac Live room correction as the miniDSP SHD, but in a configuration designed specifically for systems that already include a high-quality external DAC. By keeping the signal path entirely digital until conversion takes place in the DAC, the SHD Studio allows you to apply sophisticated DSP processing and room correction without introducing additional analogue stages. The SHD Studio forms part of the wider miniDSP processor range, offering several models tailored to different system requirements. Dirac Live room correction The SHD Studio includes Dirac Live, one of the most advanced room correction systems currently available for domestic audio. Using measurements taken with a calibrated microphone, Dirac Live analyses how your loudspeakers interact with the listening room and generates correction filters that address both frequency response and timing errors. For accurate measurements, a calibrated microphone such as the miniDSP UMIK-1 is typically used. The result is a more balanced tonal presentation, improved bass control and a more stable stereo image. Streaming and digital connectivity Like the SHD, the SHD Studio incorporates a streaming platform based on Volumio, providing access to music libraries, internet radio and a range of streaming services via a straightforward browser interface. A comprehensive set of digital inputs and outputs allows the processor to be integrated easily with digital sources, DACs and downstream equipment. Other models within the miniDSP processor range provide alternative configurations depending on your system requirements. Powerful DSP capabilities The SHD Studio provides the same DSP architecture found in the miniDSP SHD, allowing extensive control over how a system behaves in the listening room. It can be used to implement digital crossovers for active loudspeakers, integrate subwoofers with precise crossover control, apply parametric equalisation and adjust timing through delay and phase alignment. These capabilities make it possible to tailor system performance with a level of precision that is difficult to achieve with conventional analogue equipment. SHD vs SHD Studio The key difference between the two models lies in their analogue capabilities. The full size miniDSP SHD includes built-in analogue inputs and outputs, in addition to digital inputs and outputs, allowing it to function as a complete streaming preamplifier. The SHD Studio, by contrast, is designed for systems where a separate DAC is already in place, keeping the signal path fully digital until conversion occurs in the external DAC. Ideal for digitally focused systems For listeners who prefer to build their systems around a dedicated DAC while still benefiting from advanced DSP and room correction, the SHD Studio offers a powerful and flexible solution. It provides the tools required to optimise loudspeaker integration and room acoustics while preserving the digital architecture of a DAC-based system. You can also explore the wider miniDSP processor range to compare different models and system configurations. Yes. The SHD Studio is a digital-only processor designed to connect to your DAC via AES or coaxial. It’s ideal for users who already own a high-end DAC. Is Dirac Live included? Absolutely. The SHD Studio comes with a full licence for Dirac Live room correction software, so you can calibrate your system for your room and speaker setup. Do I need a microphone to use Dirac Live? Yes, a measurement microphone is required. We recommend the miniDSP UMIK-1 or UMIK-2 for accurate measurements. Can I use it with Roon? Yes. The SHD Studio is fully Roon Ready, so it can be added as a networked audio device in your Roon setup. Does it support streaming services like Spotify or TIDAL? Yes. With built-in Volumio, the SHD Studio supports streaming from Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz and other sources, all controlled from your phone or tablet. How do I connect the 8c Studio to my subwoofer? Unless your subwoofer has a digital input, which is unusual, you will need a DAC to convert the SHD Studio’s digital output to an analogue signal to feed your subwoofer. Can I mix and match DACs from different manufacturers? Mixing DACs from different manufacturers is certainly possible, as long as the DACs have similar latency (processing delay). Most DACs have a few milliseconds of latency, so the delay controls of the SHD Studio and other miniDSP processors can compensate for small differences easily. However, some DAC designs have extremely high latency, sometimes as much as 500ms, which is far beyond the limits of miniDSP’s delay controls. How does it compare to the regular SHD model? The SHD Studio omits the DAC and analogue inputs/outputs found on the full size SHD. If you only need digital processing and already have a DAC, the Studio offers the same performance and Dirac capabilities in a simpler, more focused package. Is it difficult to set up? Not especially. The Device Console software is easy to use, miniDSP has a large library of task-focused guides to help you get started and Dirac Live walks you through the measurement and correction process.
