Key Features and Design The Yamaha DJX is a 61-key, full-size keyboard equipped with built-in stereo speakers, making it convenient for both home use and portable applications, especially with its battery operation capability. It is General MIDI (GM) compatible, featuring an internal GM voice set, expanding its sonic versatility beyond its primary focus on dance music. One of the standout aspects of the DJX was its user interface, which, while colourful and having large buttons typical of home keyboards, also incorporated retro and ’90s design elements with six large white real-time control knobs and a ribbon controller. These physical controls allowed for dynamic manipulation of sounds, such as adjusting the frequency cut off and resonance, giving it a more hands-on, synthesizer-like feel compared to typical home keyboards. The ribbon controller could be assigned to various MIDI controls, including a “turntable” effect that could alter pitch and tempo, mimicking the scratching of a record. Sounds, Styles, and Effects The DJX boasted a library of over 280 voices, including many classic retro analogue instrument sounds that were particularly well-suited for dance music. The “resonant bass section” was often praised for its authenticity and punch. In addition to individual sounds, it featured 100 pre-programmed “styles” heavily oriented towards dance music, such as techno, trip-hop, jungle, drum & bass, hardcore, ragga, old skool, and R&B. These styles offered a refreshing departure from the more traditional auto-rhythms found on other home keyboards. Each style came with intro/outro variations, selectable using a dedicated button, which was a more intuitive approach compared to older “drum fill” buttons. Users could also mute different parts of the accompaniment in real-time using the “Part Control” feature, allowing for dynamic arrangement during performances. The keyboard also featured DSP effects, an arpeggiator for creating rhythmic patterns, and a sequencer for recording musical ideas. A notable, albeit basic, sampling function allowed users to record mono sounds via a line input or microphone, with a maximum of about six seconds of sampling time and storage for up to twelve samples. While the sampling quality was not high-fidelity, it was sufficient for capturing short loops or vocal lines for creative use. The Yamaha DJX keyboard has gained a somewhat cult following over the years. It is appreciated for its focus on dance music sounds and rhythms, its hands-on control elements, and its portability. Some musicians have even used it in professional contexts, highlighting its surprisingly usable sound palette despite its “toy-like” appearance to some. Its unique combination of home keyboard features with a dance music sensibility made it a distinctive instrument in the late 1990s.
